The Boating Course for 2008 is currently underway. Please for information on future courses.

Whether you are interested in power, sail or canoe, this course is for you.

Student in Class
It contains expanded, detailed boating safety information. As well, the challenge of plotting and navigation skills and the interaction with other boaters all await you in this exciting course. Successful completion of an “accredited” examination as part of the course will allow you to achieve operator competency and receive a Pleasure Craft Operator's Card (PCOC). Upon successful completion of the Boating examination you will receive a one-year membership in Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons at no charge. This course runs for 18 weeks.

  • Characteristics of boats
  • Aids to Navigation
  • Registration and licencing
  • Mandatory and optional equipment requirements
  • Boat handling-power and sail-under normal and adverse conditions
  • Ropes and knots
  • Weather
  • Docking and anchoring
  • Aids to navigation and rules of the road
  • Compass and chart familiarization
  • Introduction to plotting and navigation

Further Information

Gaining Knowledge
Boaters study the CPS Boating Course at Sir Sandford Fleming College one night a week. Students gain practical knowledge from visual aids and have time to socialize with other boaters. Above, Doug Hodgins, one of the many instructors, leads a class session.

The Rob Roy Award

The Rob Roy Award is given periodically in memory of Peterborugh Power & Sail Squadron's former Assistant Training Officer, Rob Roy, to the Boating Class student who is judged by the Instructors and Proctors to exhibit enthusiasm for boating education and the principles of safe boating and who will benefit from, and pass on to others, a continuing interest in boating education excellence. Along with a plaque, the winner receives a $100 gift certificate toward an Advanced CPS Course.
